The Ogun State chapter of Labour Party (LP) has dropped the candidature of Sina Kawonise as the governorship candidate of the party in the state, replacing him with the name of a 54 year old maritime consultant, Abolaji Sunmola, as its governorship candidate for the forthcoming election in the state.
Kawonise, former Commissioner of Information during Gbenga Daniel’s administration, became the sole aspirant of the party after he was affirmed at the governorship primary election held in December last year.
The indication that Kawonise might not be fielded as the party’s flag bearer emerged last week when INEC announced the name of the State Chairman of LP, Bode Simeon, as the party’s candidate for February 28 governorship election.
Reacting to the development, Kawonise described the development as an illegality, threatening that he had assembled his team of lawyers to sue the party for a redress.
In a statement he personally signed, Kawonise said, “My attention has been drawn to an illegality committed by the National Working Committee of the Labour Party in submitting the name of Abolaji Sunmola to the INEC as the LP Governorship Candidate in Ogun State”.
“The fact of the matter is that I am the lawfully elected candidate of the LP in the state. I was the sole aspirant that attended the affirmative congress of the LP in Abeokuta on December 10, 2104.
“The Congress that returned me as the governorship candidate was witnessed by INEC, the Directorate of State Security (DSS), the Police, and the media.
“It is on record that the INEC team that witnessed the congress duly wrote the report of the Congress returning me as the governorship candidate and submitted same to INEC headquarters in Abuja.
“My legal team has concluded briefs to take up the matter in the appropriate court.
While speaking with newsmen, in Abeokuta, the party’s secretary, Sunday Oginni, explained that the party had replaced the name of the state party chairman, Olabode Simeon, whose name had been submitted as the party governorship candidate with Sunmola.
