Katsina Police Kill 6 bandits, rescue 4 NYSC Corps members

Katsina Police has disclosed that it has killed six suspected bandits and rescued four NYSC Corps members who were on their way to report to their camp in Zamfara State.
The Police also recovered two rifles and several ammunition from the suspected bandits during the operation.
During the rescue mission, six suspected bandits were killed by the police while two rifles and several ammunitions were recovered.
It also gathered that some bandits were apprehended during the operation.
It was learnt that the police were able to carry out the operation after they were led to the bandits’ hideout in the forest by a group of repentant bandits familiar with the terrain.
According to police on Monday at about 11:30pm, the bandits in military uniform in Funtua council area had waylaid an 18-seater bus that was going to neighboring Zamfara state.
Among the passengers were 13 prospective corps members, who were on their way to report for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
But four of the prospective corps members were whisked away into the forest by the bandits while passengers’ belongings that included handsets and monies, were confiscated by the bandits.
Those whisked away, three males and a female, said they were forced to trek for a whole day and made to sleep on a rocky terrain, before they were rescued.
SP Gambo Isah, the Katsina Command Public Relations Officer disclosed this to newsmen on Thursday in Katsina.
Isah said that some bandits were also arrested by the police during the operation to rescue the corps members and other passengers.
It was learnt that the police were able to carry out the operation after they were led to the bandits’ hideout in the forest by a group of repentant bandits familiar with the terrain.
The PPRO said that the bandits, “kidnapped all the 18 passengers comprising of 13 NYSC prospective members and five others.
“On arrival, the police team searched into the nearby bush and rescued 14 passengers made up of nine NYSC members and five civilians while four corps members and one civilian were whisked away by fleeing bandits.
“Search party led by Officer in charge of SARS Katsina in collaboration with repentant bandits led by one Ado Haliru and teams went after the bandits up to Doka forest in Faskari LGA of Katsina state.
He said the team succeeded in locating the camp of the kidnappers, engaged them in a fierce gun duel and rescued the remaining four NYSC memebrs and a civilian.
“Furthermore, the team succeeded and killed six of the kidnappers, recovered one AK47 rifle, one LAR rifle, seven rounds of 7.62mm and 12 rounds of 7.67mm ammunition from the bandits.
“All the NYSC members are from Akure, Ondo state heading to NYSC camp at Tsafe, Zamfara state for the NYSC scheme.”
Meanwhile Governor Aminu Bello Masari, has commended efforts of the security for the rescue, saying government would collaborate with security agencies to deal with banditry and related crimes in the state.
He however warned corps members and other road users to desist from embarking on night journeys and during odd hours, especially on roads known to have security challenges.
