Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has promised to provide necessary support and encouragement to the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to enhance its capability in providing technical assistance to industries, particularly micro, small and medium enterprises in the State.
The promise was made when the Director General, SON, Mallam Farouk Salim led some members of his management on a courtesy visit to the Governor in his office recently.
Governor Ganduje posited that Nigerian products and services would be lacking in competitiveness without an organisation like SON providing standards and quality assurance support to industries. The organisation’s relevance according to the Governor is further underscored by the country’s strive towards self-sufficiency, particularly in food production.
He commended the President’s appointment of Mallam Salim, an indigene of Kano State as Director General of SON and acknowledged the new zeal and passion he has brought to the job in the few months since his assumption of duty.
Governor Ganduje assured the SON Chief Executive that his request for land to build a befitting Regional Office and Laboratory in Kano would receive expedited action from the State Government.
Speaking earlier, Mallam Farouk Salim highlighted the importance of Kano as the most populated city in Nigeria and the premier centre of commerce in the North and as such required a more impactful presence of SON to provide greater technical support, especially to Micro Small and Medium Enterprises.
He sought the Government’s consideration and approval for land to enable SON build a befitting Regional Office, Laboratory and Warehouse to enhance its effectiveness in providing technical support for industries and businesses in Kano and environ.
The SON DG stated that prompt approval of the request by the State Government would enhance the Organisation’s ability to efficiently standardize products and services including Halal products which will position the state and the country in general to take advantage of the export potentials to countries in the Middle East.
Mallam Salim assured the Governor, in particular and people of Kano State of his determination to be a good ambassador of the State in his service to the Nation through SON.
The Director General then presented a SON branded plaque to Governor Ganduje as a token of appreciation for the reception.
