From Mustapha Adamu, Kano

Governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to order for the total reconstruction of Kano-Abuja road.
Ganduje made the appeal at an interactive session for community leaders with President Buhari, as part of his just concluded 2-day working visit to the state, held at the Government House on Thursday.
According to Governor Ganduje, the Kano-Abuja road had become death trap for the motorists plying it daily, adding that it had also become a beehive for kidnappers and armed robbers.
He noted that reconstructing the road had economic advantage for Northwest region, adding it would boost agricultural activities for people living along the area.
“Sir, as you are aware, the main road linking Kano with the Federal Capital Territory, is the one going through Kaduna.
“Your Excellency, this road has failed in many sections, making it a death trap and hiding point for kidnappers and armed robbers.
“It is my prayer that the President will direct for the total reconstruction of Kano-Abuja road, “ he said.
Governor Ganduje also appealed to Buhari for the revival of Gari River Project in Kano State, which was commissioned by the president when he was the chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF).
He noted that the project would immensely improve the lives of the people of Makoda, Dambatta and Kunci Local Government areas of Kano State, and by and extension, the people of Roni Local Government are of Jigawa State.
In his remarks, President Buhari said his administration was in talk with the Niger Republic on rehabilitation of Tran-Saharan highways, but said his priority was to fix the Kano-Abuja road.
He said, “We are in talks with Niger Republic on Trans-Sahara highways, and they are willing to do it, but you know I am more concerned about the Kaduna-Kano highway. There are frequent accidents on the road, so let us fix it first, thereafter we go back to the Trans-Sahara highways issue,“
