The 2019 gubernatorial race in kaduna state yesterday took a dramatic turn as two prominent personalities over the weekend declared their intention to challenge the incumbent Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in the state governorship election in 2019.
First to declare his intention to contest for the state’s exalted position was the immediate past Governor of the state, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero, who through one of his aides, made his intention known on facebook.
Similarly, the Senator representing Kaduna Central in the senate, Shehu Sani, follow suit by officially declaring his intention to contest against Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna state in 2019 gubernatorial elections.
Speaking with journalists, Senator Sani said it was time to rescue the Kashim Ibrahim Government House Kaduna from those who have converted it to serve some group of consultants and white skinned persons who have no bearing with the true owners.
“I want you to know that I will contest for governorship position in Kaduna state come 2019. Right now, Kaduna state is in the hands of some consultants and some white skinned persons. Kashim Ibrahim Government House has been locked from the true owners. We are coming to open it to the people so that they can have access to it once again.
“People in Kaduna state have been denied dividend of democracy, we must bring true democracy to the people,” he said.
When asked whether he was going to contest in the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC), Sani said he was already on his way out of the ruling party, adding that the party is at the verge of collapse with a lot of intra party squabbles.
According to him, “What is happening in APC is frightening and I am afraid if the party can come out of it. It is unfortunate that all what the party accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is what we have now in APC, if not more. There is so much impunity, infighting, crisis and lack of internal democracy. The party is enmeshed with prolonged leadership crisis at the national and state levels.
“There were no congresses in several states across the nation. It was all illegitimate exercise where the Governors just drew up lists and send to the national headquarters of the party, who accepts such lists hook, line and sinker. Here in Kaduna, there was no congress, the Governor just assembled those he selected and announced their names.
“As it is now, APC really stands on a very shaky ground and unless something is done, it is not just me, our group is leaving APC. We are already at the departure lounge, ready to go any moment from now.
“As for 2019, we are in discussion with 25 political parties who have approached us for the Kaduna Project. So, what we will have in Kaduna is an alliance with these political parties and we have been meeting regularly. I am a team player, if at the end the people of Kaduna State want me to remain in the Senate, I will have no choice but to obey them, but otherwise, I will contest for the governorship of the state,” he said.
