From Femi Oyelola, Kaduna

Residents of Unguwan Kudu, a suburb of Kaduna metropolis in Kaduna North local government area of the state, have expressed dismay over alleged increase in crime rate in the area, particularly at this festive period.

The residents informed Peoples Daily that two members of the community were robbed in broad daylight.

One of the victims, Mr. Young was robbed in his car by some group of persons, numbering seven, while he was relaxing in his car in the afternoon, described the incident as terrible and called on security agents to come to the rescue of the community.

“They asked me to come down from my car, collected my handsets money and took a car battery from my car and left”, he narrated.

Also speaking, Mr. Christopher Onwuara, a friend of the victim said they have reported the matter to the Unguwan Rimi Divisional Police Station and the leader of the armed group has been identified and would soon be apprehended, as his family promised to hand him over to the Police.

It was also gathered that a young man that recently came to the area was robbed of his wallet by a group of boys, who were related to the gang that robbed Mr. Young.

An eyewitness, Miss Tinok Haruna, said she saw all that took place.

“I saw the hoodlums following the man because they saw him with a wallet designed in dollars and they thought what was contained in wallet should be dollars; they forced him down and tore his cloth and removed his money and injure him seriously.”, she narrated.

Some residents complained that activities of drug-dealers in the area are responsible for the increase in crime rate in the area; they said hemp-peddlers have taken over the area.

“These boys selling hemp are the ones inviting these criminals and if nothing is done to curtail their activities this environment would be inhabitable for us.”

A resident, who does want his name in print, blamed the Police for not helping matters and accused them of complacency and not doing much in riding the area of crime.

When contacted, the Police did not respond to requests for comment.
