Kaduna: Bye election holds in Kauru/Chawai Constituency June 21st

From Femi Oyelola, Kaduna

Bye election to fill the vacuum created by the death of a member of Kaduna State House of Assembly representing Kauru/Chawai, Hon. Shuaibu M. Tukura, is to hold on 21st June, 2014.

This was decided at the stakeholders meeting between the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political parties, security and other stakeholders at the INEC headquarters in Kaduna yesterday.

Although INEC had earlier proposed that the bye election be held on the 24th May, 2014, the political parties’ representatives, especially from the opposition All Progressive Congress (APC), disagreed with the proposal, arguing that the time frame was too short for them to put their houses in order and campaign for the election.

They however rescheduled the INEC proposed date and gave wider period for the political parties to campaign and slated the bye election date for 21st June, 2014.

Earlier in his address, the Kaduna INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Alhaji Haliru Aliyu Tambuwal, informed the meeting that the Commission has been organizing series of activities since

2011 to date aimed at achieving a free, fair and credible election come 2015.

Assuring that the INEC is making all necessary plans for a successful and credible 2015 general elections, the REC sought the cooperation of stakeholders, particularly the political parties, to operate within the confine of the law, mostly during their party congresses, primaries, campaigns and other activities.

He stressed that the bye-election in the Kauru/Chawai constituency will be in the 11 wards and 17 existing polling units of the constituency.

Meanwhile, party members who attended the meeting appealed to INEC to live up to their words by providing an enabling environment and a evel playing ground for all political parties during the bye-election.

This is just as the police and other security agents at the meeting assured of adequate security during the bye-election.
