The All Progressives Congress yesterday accused President Goodluck Jonathan and his party of intensifying plots to scuttle the 2015 general elections next month.
Addressing a press conference in Lagos, National Publicity Secretary, APC Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the stop-Buhari-at-all-cost campaign is being pursued simultaneously with the push to postpone next month elections, ostensibly because of the low level of PVC distribution but in the real sense an implementation of the stated mindset of the presidency never to hand over to Gen. Buhari, and then set up an interim government.
“We call on the international community to take note of the multi-faceted campaign to stop Gen. Buhari at all cost and scuttle next month’s elections to pave the way for an interim government that will benefit no one but the PDP, the Jonathan Administration and its cronies.
“We ask those who are mortally afraid of Gen. Buhari to douse their fears and meet us at the polls next month,” Lai Mohammed said.
He explained that with just a little over two weeks to next month’s general election, a number of court cases have been instituted in an unrelenting effort to stop our presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari.
“At the last count, at least four cases have been filed by those who are undoubtedly fronting for the PDP and the Presidency, and all are working towards the same goal: Stop Buhari, Scuttle next month’s elections. We expect more cases to be filed in pursuit of this ignominious objective,” he said.
He added that the Stop-Buhari-At-All-Cost campaigners engaged in scandal mongering, that Buhari is not qualified to run because he did not have the pre-requisite qualification.
“In fact, they so much believed their own lies that they swore to have found a fool-proof way to stop Gen. Buhari. Then their house of lies collapsed when it was proven beyond doubt that our candidate sat for and passed his Cambridge Examination.
“Not knowing what to do next, they procured a forged medical certificate from the ‘Ahmadu Bello University hospital’ of their warped imagination, that our candidate is suffering from prostate cancer, but their 419 certificate had barely been unveiled before it was disowned by the authentic Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital. Again, the web of lies woven by the PDP and the Presidency unraveled before their very eyes.
“A regime that has nothing to hide or fear will not hesitate to allow international coverage of what is undoubtedly one of the most important elections in the world this year! Information reaching us indicates that most of the foreign journalists who applied for visas to travel to Nigeria, from different parts of the world, for the elections have been kept in abeyance under the guise of security clearance. This is totally unacceptable, and it is another indication that this administration has a lot of skeletons in its cupboard as far as the forthcoming election is concerned. We ask local and international observers to take note of this, and to immediately take the Administration to task with a view to ameliorating the situation.”
Also yesterday the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sunusi II called on the electorate to make a credible choice in the forthcoming elections warning that making a bad choice would be a recipe for disaster.
Sunusi II who was speaking yesterday in his palace in Kano when the Peoples Democratic Movement, PDM gubernatorial flag bearer in Kano, Engr. Bashir Ishaq paid him a courtesy visit said the issue of leadership deserve a great deal of commitment and sacrifice, stressing that although one is at a liberty to vote for a candidate of his choice voting for the right person is important.
According to him, the Kano Emirate Council is a non partisan traditional institution that was never known to be partisan.
“You should make sure that you did not allow your votes to fall into the hands of persecutors. You should not concede your votes to those you know would oppress you” he said.
The monarch who spoke at length on the need for avoiding violence in the name of politics also advised the political elites to begin to accommodate the views of one another without prejudice.
Meanwhile, the national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said it has noted a deliberate attempt by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disenfranchise its members and supporters in Lagos state by refusing to release their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to them.
PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh in a statement on Thursday said the party has observed that officials of INEC are working hand in gloves with the APC in the state to frustrate the distribution of the PVCs in PDP strongholds as well as to non-indigenes in the state.
The PDP described the development as “unacceptable, illegal and part of the criminal plot by the APC to hold on to power in the face of its dwindling popularity among the people who are now eager to vote enmasse for the PDP and end APC’s dictatorial rule in the state.
“While we restate our commitment to peaceful and credible elections come February 14th 2015, we will not accept any attempt to scheme us out in any state or states controlled by the APC”, the PDP noted.
The PDP said the APC has been jittery over the increasing popularity of President Goodluck Jonathan and the PDP governorship candidate in the state, Mr. Olujimi Agbaje and now seeks to compromise the electoral process by manipulating the distribution of the PVCs.
Stating that INEC has refused to check the trend despite repeated concerns raised by its state chapter and other well meaning Nigerians, the PDP said the onus now lies on the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega and the leadership of the commission to prove their innocence by immediately intervening and ensuring that all eligible voters in the state received their PVCs accordingly.
The PDP also demanded that INEC thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure that all those involved are sanctioned in order to restore confidence in the electoral process in the state.
