Jigawa: NGO trains 140 women in politics

A Non Governmental Organisation (Village Development Initiative) advocating for women participating in politics has trained 140 women on how to mobilize and enlighten the women to fully participate and contest in all political offices in Jigawa state.
Speaking during the training held in Dutse the state capital, the executive director of the Village Development Initiative, Comrade Lawal Ya’u Abdullahi, said his organization embarked on the project of encouraging of women political participation and representation after a report of a research conducted by National Democratic Institute.
According to him, the report indicated that only six percent female are in the national Assemblies, while northern part of the country recorded high non participation of women in politics.
He explained that his organization with in colloboration with Women in Politics (WIP), UKAid’s assisted and trained 90 women who were skilled on enlightenment and mobilization to encourage women to participate and contested elective positions more expecially legislative positions.
“Emphasis was given to youth whom were the bedrock of any society and their influence in political activities, another 50 famale undergraduates from different institutions across the state majority leaders in Student Union Government (SUG) and trained on mentor and mentees aim at enlightening, encouraging and supporting women political paciticipation and representation”, he said.
Also speaking, the project director of VILDEV, Mustapha Umar noted that alot of enlightenment and mobilization means have been created in order to achieve the objective desired.
Mustapha Umar maintained that “some of these means include discussion programme in Radio stations, public enlightenment campaigns including this towns hall meeting”.
On his part, the VILDEV Communication Manager, Malam Saudi Shehu, said the objective of the town-hall meeting is to highlight on Islamic perception to make youths in Jigawa and women’s political representation and participation, to identify a group of male youths who will act as ambassador of WiP (Women in Politics) promoting active involvement of women in politics and governance, and create awareness among male youths on benefits of having women in elective positions and public offices.
