Junior Chamber International, Benin Metropolitan on Monday morning carried out a cleanup exercise at the famous Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre on Airport road in Benin City, Edo state Capital.
The exercise which lasted for two hours, was carried out in the presence of Commuters, Pedestrians and traders who had converted the place to a trading spot.
Oba Akenzua II statue is located in front of the Oba Akenzua II Cutural Centre. The Centre had been taken over by dirt and weeds.
The 2018 President JCI, Junior chamber, Benin, Comrade Bevy Efe, said the gesture was part of the event to mark “JCI Active Citizens’ Week” in the state.
He said: “the aim was to preserve the Cultural heritage of the people and prevenue ou break of epidemic.
“That place has become a refuse dump centre against the original purpose”, he said “the untidy nature of the environment was the reason for the Community service”.
Peoples Daily recalled that the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) had in October 2017, raised the alarm at the alleged desecration of Oba Akenzua II statue by traders and Commercial vehicles drivers in Benin City.
