Junior Chamber International, Benin Metropolitan on Monday morning carried out a cleanup exercise at the famous Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre on Airport road in Benin City, Edo state Capital.
The exercise which lasted for two hours, was carried out in the presence of Commuters, Pedestrians and traders who had converted the place to a trading spot.
Oba Akenzua II statue is located in front of the Oba Akenzua II Cutural Centre. The Centre had been taken over by dirt and weeds.
The 2018 President JCI, Junior chamber, Benin, Comrade Bevy Efe, said the gesture was part of the event to mark “JCI Active Citizens’ Week” in the state.
He said: “the aim was to preserve the Cultural heritage of the people and prevenue ou break of epidemic.
“That place has become a refuse dump centre against the original purpose”, he said “the untidy nature of the environment was the reason for the Community service”.
Peoples Daily recalled that the Benin Traditional Council (BTC) had in October 2017, raised the alarm at the alleged desecration of Oba Akenzua II statue by traders and Commercial vehicles drivers in Benin City.
The Secretary to BTC, Frank Irabor, who raised the red flag a statement said the conversion of Cultural Centre to a trading spot, negates the letters of the Memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II and the state governor, Godwin
Obaseki had ordered the relocation of the temporal relocation of the Central motor park to pave way for his urban renewal drive before the construction of a Central motor park.
Members of the Public Works Guards (PUWOG) 48 hours after the complaint, sacked the traders from the Cultural Centre which however not complied with by the traders, thereby hindering human and vehicular movement.
