Governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the member representing Egbado South/Ipokia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rep Abiodun Akinlade, has described as immoral the alleged plot to impeach President Goodluck Jonathan over the latest fracas between members and the Police authorities last week.
Akinlade, a third term member who is also the Chairman, House Committee on Science and Technology, told newsmen that though the policemen who prevented the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, may have been wrong, it would amount to an overkill for the House to commence an impeachment process based on that.
While acknowledging that the opposition members of the House are those driving the impeachment process to satisfy their parochial interest, the lawmaker expressed the optimism that such would not see the light of the day because the opposition members are in the minority.
The lawmaker said “the call for the impeachment of the President is absolutely immoral. Yes, the police may have been wrong in stopping the leadership of the House from assessing the National Assembly but two wrongs can never make a right. The police action alone is not enough for somebody to commence impeachment proceedings.
“Collection of impeachment signatures being orchestrated by the opposition elements in the House is like taking politics too far. This is capable of overheating the polity especially as we inch towards the 2015 general elections.
“I appeal to my colleagues to calm down and allow the relevant authorities to handle the matter peacefully so as not to play into the hands of the enemies of democracy who are waiting in the wings to reap from crisis that may erupt between the executive and the legislature.”
