By Amaechi Agbo

Ahead of their debut in the CAF Champions League next month, coach of the NPFL champions, Plateau United, Kennedy Boboye has stated that his team winning the coveted trophy is achievable if his boys play to instructions. The coach who asserted that the Jos-based side is not going to the continental league as mere participants, said his team will do the country proud in the league.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with our correspondent, Amaechi Agbo, the tactician said that his team was not under any pressure to retain the NPFL diadem they won last year but appealed to the fans patience adding that the players will give a good account of themselves.

Coach how did you feel emerging champions of the 2016/17 NPFL season?
It is the dream of every coach to come out as champion in a league you play in. but for me, that is done and dusted. We are thinking of the new season.

Fans expectations in the new NPFL season
They should be patient with us. We are going to Nasarawa United to showcase ourselves by getting something out of the match. If we cannot get the three points, I think a point will be good to come back home with and plan for our next game on Wednesday.

Any pressure as defending champions?
There is no pressure from anywhere. The most important thing is to keep the team intact because we have almost all the players that won the league with us and we brought in some good legs to strengthen the team. We are not under pressure at all but the most important thing is to give a good account of ourselves. Not to play or act like past champions of last season because everybody is saying one or two things about the team. With hard work, we might be there.

How many legs have you brought in to fortify the team?
We have brought in 8 new players from other teams who have joined us. Most of them have tested CAF Champions League and played outside the shores of the country.

To play in the CAF Champions League requires a lot of money. How prepared is your team financially ahead of your first continental match next month?
We are prepared. The government is prepared because they have been up and doing since we resumed. They are ready to do anything. If you go to the stadium, money has been pumped into it and they are on it now.

For the past years, Nigerian clubs have not been doing well in the CAF CL. What do Nigerians expect from your team ahead of the continental league?
Of course, we will do our best. You cannot expect anything better than our best. That is for sure. We don’t want to be among the teams that will be participating in the Champions League. It is doable for us to win the Champions League if we work hard and play to instructions just like we did in the NPFL. We will try and do our best for everybody to see that we are a team that can do something good for the country.

What has been the challenge so far?
We don’t have any challenge for now.

What is your assessment of CHAN Eagles in Morocco.
They are a good team with good players. The coaches there are capable of the job and they are doing a great job taken the team there because I saw them and played against them in Kano when we played NPFL Super Six. If they continue with the way they are, I think the sky will be their limits.

Message to Fans as the NPFL 2017/18 kicks off
I want to beg the fans to be patient and they will see good football.

Speaking after his team defeated Nasarawa United by a lone goal in Lafia stadium on Match Day One of the 2017/18 NPFL season on Sunday, the Plateau United Gaffer declared “What a way to kickoff the season. It was a difficult match knowing full well that Nasarawa United are no push over.
“We were only lucky they failed to make good use of their chances which we ended up taking advantage of to nick all three points.
“I have been at Plateau United for two seasons now and I am proud to say I am yet to taste defeat in Lafia to Nasarawa United, it was more or less my confidence coming into this game and I was sweet preserving my record.
“Now this match is done and dusted we are looking forward to our next two home matches.”

The defending champions will host Rivers United tomorrow in one of the Match Day 2 fixtures of the NPFL new season.
