From Osaigbovo Iguobaro, Benin

The Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) yesterday, threatened to withdraw its service over poor working environment across government hospitals nationwide.

They however appealed to the Federal Government and National Assembly to take steps and curtail the rising spate of extreme wastage of human lives in the country.

The declaration is contained in a communiqué issued after its National Executive Council (NEC) in Benin City, by Dr. O. S. Oluwole and Dr. Aderemi Adeosun; President and Secretary, urged traditional rulers and other well-meaning citizens to cooperate with government for the nation’s unity.

The group urged the federal and state government to ensure the safety of medical consultants and release of others that are currently held captive by their abductors.

It said: “The management and boards of hospitals in the country should ensure appropriate disciplinary action against any member of the hospital community who harasses any medical consultant, interns, residents and any doctor that works un medical consultants.

“Remuneration for clinical duty of honorary medical consultants in Teaching Hospitals should be reviewed urgently to ensure uninterrupted delivery of health care services and training of medical students at all Teaching Hospitals in the country.

“The payments of call duty allowance to medical consultants should reward work done, but not fixed arbitrarily”.
