A private School owned by Indian Couple, Mrs Antony Joseph in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, has emerged winner of the 2019 Seplat Pearls annual secondary schools quiz competition.
Don Bosco Academy was declared winner with a total of 74 points, while Peniel Academy, Agbor, Delta State, came second after scoring 54 points in the final category held at Imaguero College, Benin City.
The students were tested in English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics in the competition in wich Deeper Life High School, Sapele came third with 69 points.
The winning school, Don Bossco Academy got N7m (Seven million naira) cash prize to be used to execute projects in the school, while each of the students went home with the sum of N150,000 each.
Also, the second prize winner, Peniel Academy got N3m (Three million naira) prize money while the students got the sum of N75, 000 each.
Third placed school, Deeper Life High School, Opete, Delta got N1m (One million naira) for their performance, while participating students were rewarded with the sum of N50,000 each.
In his welcome address, Mr Austin Avuru, the Chief Executive Officer, Seplat said the objective of the programme was to rekindle the spirit of academic excellence and healthy competition in youths.
Avuru who was represented by the Mr Chima Njoku, General Manager, Western Assets, Seplat, said the annual event was also to motivate, encourage and reward scholarship spirit in young minds.
Mrs Chioma Nwachuku, the External Affairs and Communication, Seplat said a total number of 862 schools participated in the event adding that, 523 of the number were from Edo while 339 were from Delta.
She noted since the inception of the pearls Quiz competition, 63 students have been awarded scholarships adding that, Four 16- seater Toyota Hiace buses have also be given to winning schools in the past.
