Heads of various primary and secondary schools including their teachers across Delta State are allegedly swimming in illegal fee collection scam.
With hue and cry of the highest level of extortion and its related activities, Parents/Guardians on Thursday in Asaba protested the thriving activities, especially in Public schools where the collection often is carried out with reckless abandoned.
But the state Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Chief Patrick Ukah in a statement he issued and signed, a copy made available to Journalists in Asaba, frowned at the persistent cases of illegal fee collection in various schools, saying that the state government has zero tolerance for illegal levies and warned that any principal or school head caught in the act will be made to face the full wrath of the law.
Investigation revealed that heads/ teachers work in tandem to ensure that the illegal fee is successfully carried out in the face of unsuspecting parents and guardians who are also compelled to pay or have their children sent home out of school.
Ukah’s statement, however, advised parents not to encourage the collection of illegal levies by paying such money but should resist it and report such erring principal or school head to the appropriate authority for necessary action and information.
The teachers/ heads of school modus operandi, informed sources said, is to insist on cash of N2,000 and N2,500 as those who failed are not allowed into classes until the items and money are summited to them in school.
The Commissioner, however, listed the approved levies for public primary schools to include school badge for primary one to primary six N50,00 every three years, report cards for primary one and transfer pupils N250,00 every six years, consumables for primary one to primary six N100,00 per term.
For students in public post primary schools, all students are to pay N150,00 every session for school badge,N200,00 termly for sports/ NSSF levy, adding that all students including transfer students, will pay N250,00 termly for customized on line result, while JS1, SS 1and transfer students are to pay N150,00 every three years for students file, and warned that PTAs must take decision during general meeting of the body where parents will agree on a particular amount to be paid.
