Idoma youth group laments marginalization in Benue

From Uche Nnorom, Makurdi

A group known as Idoma Youth Coalition has frowned at the endless political gimmick of zoning in Benue State which is skewed to enslave a particular section.

The youth activist group numbering over eight hundred thousand from different political parties and organizations across the state after its meeting held in Makurdi, stated in a press statement signed by its chairman Comrade Austin Agada that though they believe in the principle of zoning however, lamented over the discriminative and unfair type being practiced in the state where a very crucial integral part of the state ‘Benue South’ with the highest number of local governments is perpetually sidelined and hampered from benefiting from governing the state.

They also condemned and reject in totality the agitations, pronouncement or endorsement by some persons or group that the governorship slot for 2015 be zoned to the MINDA.

“We state categorically, that we shall in total throw our support firmly to zone ‘A’ to continue if the MINDA refuses to concede to Zone C’s demand and rights of its fair share of equal power distribution. This is a clear case of injustice if the current Governor, Gabriel Suswam, who is on the verge of completing his second term tenure of four years is from Zone ‘A’, and the MINDA in zone ‘B’ where his predecessor Sen. Dr. George Akume who held it from 1999-2007 is still canvassing for it to come back to his zone, a kindergarten pupil knows that in alphabetical order, after A, B, the preceding letter ‘C’ progressively follows.

“Consequently, we call on zone ‘A’ and all its intending aspirants to come out in full and open meaningful discussion with the Zone ‘C’ as we shall not subscribe to women or material style of politics to sell our birth right. While we await the political “Judgment Day: we shall painstakingly embark on voters enlightenment and use every legitimate and legal means to sensitize and prepare the grounds for the political hurricane that will certainly put to an end this deceitful and clandestine kind of politicking as MINDA is not a zone as falling in this generational struggle will spell doom for even the generations yet unborn as Benue State will become more imperiled”, the statement said in part.

While saluting the courage of aspirants from Zone C in their quest to govern the state in 2015, the group urged them not to relent or be deterred from the noble course, maintaining that “if the doctrine of power rotation will not be entrenched into the fabrics of standard democratic norms and values then, they should endeavour to balance the equation by supporting a Zone ‘A’ candidature and truncate the unpopular doctrine of nepotism and sentimental zonal rotation”.
