The Independent Corruption Practices Commission (ICPC) in collaboration with Foundation for Transparency and Accountability (FTA) said it is training top officials of Ebonyi state Local Government Area Councils on anti -corruption graft practices.
This was disclosed yesterday during the opening ceremony of the training tagged “Anti-Corruption, Ethics and Integrity Training “ which is taken place in Abuja from 10 – 12 October 2017, saying there is a need for capacity building for the local government officials, they are the important tier of government closest to the people, Ebonyi State has taking the right step in the right direction.
In his opening remarks Prof Sola Akinrinda ,the Provost Anti – Corruption Academy Of Nigeria ( ICPC) stated that ,the training is timely, the Ebonyi State governor has keyed in to vision by equipping elected and appointed officials with relevant knowledge and skills in relation to the war against corruption is very important and bold step if the Councils are to achieve the mandate for their existence.
“It is also important for elected and appointed officials at our local governments to know how to conduct themselves while occupying positions of trust. Officials holding office for a specific term or tenure and ultimately must give account. It would be a tragedy if upon leaving office, a local government chairman or official of any status has to serve another term behind bars for unwholesome acts committed while in office”, he said.
Prof. Akinrinda maintained that the training constituted the another phase of ICPC engagement with Ebonyi State, starting with the capacity building workshop for officials of the State Fiscal Responsibility Commission, followed by the Ebonyi State Anti-Corruption Summit .
He further emphasised the importance of the sensitisation programme carried out with capacity building for relevant officials who will drive the Anti-Corruption policy in various agencies of Government at the State and Local Government levels.
“It is therefore a thing of delight that the Government of EbonyiState has followed up its public commitment to waging unrelenting war against corruption with support for this programme. The depth of commitment becomes glaring with the presence of the Governor of the State at this programme. This is a clear statement of the values which the Governor and the Government under his watch espouse.”
Consequently, the Governor of Ebonyi State David Umahi who declared the training opened pointed out that ,the State government will trained all its indigenes from the top government officials, Civil servants , market men and women, Tertiary institutions and those in the primary schools must gain knowledge of anti – corruption practices.
Umahi lamented that “The capacity training will boost their knowledge on corruption, how to handle public funds and how to be accountable to funds given to the local governments for the rural people”.
“Ebonyi state has integrity and we must be committed to our people by waging war on corruption”.
