United Action Against Corruption and Injustice International (UAACAII), a Non-Governmental, has commended the new Director General of the Department of state security service Mr. Matthew Seiyefa for indicating his commitment to promote and protect national interest and review all the complaints of human rights abuse and illegal detention in order to gain public trust in the agency.
The group which disclosed this in a maiden press conference addressed last week in Abuja by its Coordinator Northern Zone, Jamil Bala Muhammad quoted the new acting D.G saying, “We are reviewing all issues that brought about some unhelpful perception of the service in recent times, including court cases on detentions, perceived human rights abuses, public misconception of understanding and some of our recent actions; we are reviewing all these. In order to learn the lessons, we have undertaken action to ensure that we enjoy the confidence of the public.”
The group said they were convinced the DSS is determined by working within its core mandate of rule of law and in consonant with global best practices.
“We believed that many Nigerians have confidence in the service and it is not too late to do what is right, just and equitable. Especially to the most talked about cases of complaints that have to do with human right.
“To site example of some of these complaints in many quarters is the continued detention of Colonel Sambo Dasuki who is said to have fulfil all his bail condition as well as the case of Mal. Ibrahim Zakzaky”.
While believing in the determination of the new DSS Boss to review the complaints of human right abuse and illegal detention, they urged stakeholders to as a matter of national interest positively give all maximum cooperation to the service.
