The Commander, Operation Safe Haven, (OPSH), the multi-security task force responsible for maintaining peace in Plateau and parts of Bauchi States, Augustine Agundu has disclosed how the operation was able to restore peace in Plateau.
Plateau has experienced series of religious and ethnic crisis where many lives were lost.
Despite the relative peace, the operation had on October 11 2019, disclosed that two soldiers attached to the OPSH were killed in attacks in Barikin Ladi and Riyom Local Government Areas.
The Dagwam Ray Ropp and chairman traditional rulers of Barikin LGA, Edward Gyang, confirmed that there is peace in the trouble areas compared to the past adding that people go about the normal activities.
“Actually there is peace on the Plateau, especially in Barikin Ladi, even though one can’t not completely do away with other forms criminality. Some unpatriotic people hide under the banner of other forms of criminality to cause trouble but even with that a lot of things have changed. People in Barikin Ladi are enjoying relative peace. We thank God for that. Before now, people don’t want to hear the name of Barikin Ladi but not the story has changed.
The Chairman Miyyeti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria ( MACBAN), Nura Abdullahi, when contacted on the claim made by the army general, agree with what Mr Agundu has said.
He said, “ I concur with what general Agundu has said because the situation is relatively different. What disturb our peace now are armed robbery, kidnapping and cattle rustling which we hope would be delt with looking at the efforts by the Security.
According to the army general, one of the factors that help the OPSH to restore peace is that the state governor, Simon Lalong, has shown willingness to ensure peace among the citizens in the state.
General Agundu said frequent meeting with religious and traditional leaders is another strategy employ to bring peace and harmony in the state, explaining that both traditional and religious leaders have a key role to play in any peace process.
The army general added that prompt action on rumors was another reason his operation was able to be dusting tension and other kinds of criminality in the state.
Mr Agundu made the disclosure on Sunday during 2019 Thanksgiving Service of Divine Grace Chapel of OPSH held at the Hill Station Hotel, Jos .
He said, “ One of the reasons we are able to achieve relative peace in Plateau is that the state governor, Simon Lalong has been showing willingness to embrace peace. Lalong is read for peace and i always thank him for that. His actions towards peace have given much courage to our soldiers.
“ I don’t discriminate against any religion or tribe. Whenever there is problem, I call both religious and traditional rulers to discuss and proffer solution and everyone is cooperating. That has been helping us a lot.
“Moreover, when we hear rumors about any move to disturb our peace, we go into action. We are tired of crisis. We must live in peace. I have declared. We must live in peace. There are beneficiaries of this crisis and God will not allow them to continue, “ he added.
General Agundu however, said, his operation is now concentrating more on the hinterlands because the city of Jos is relatively peaceful, calling on all and sundry in the state to forgive one another and embrace peace.
Earlier in his comment, at the event, the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, northern region, Rev. Yakubu Pam, commended General Agundu, for his efforts towards ensuring peace and unity in the state, describing him as a man of sincerity who has changed the narrative.
