The re-admitted member of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Lawal Shuaibu, yesterday gave an insight into how sale of forms for various political positions fueled the internal political crisis which threatened to collapse the party.
Lawal Shuaibu, who is the Vice National Chairman of APC north, at the height of the APC crisis, was suspended by the party chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, over alleged insubordination.
However, speaking to journalists yesterday at the party’s national secretariat, Shuaibu hinted that the party sold forms to aspirants, and turned around to anoint a particular candidate for the various positions when it was time to the actual contest.
He alluded that it was an invitation to crisis for the party to have collected money as high as N2.5 million or more for expression of interest forms from millions of persons who aspired for various positions on the APC platforms during the 2019 elections, and turn around to anoint one candidate for the positions.
He explained that since the party was not ready to allow an open contest on a level playing field for the aspirants, it should have been prepared to refund the money to others who were not chosen as anointed candidates.
“The pertinent question is who do you reconcile. You told me to come and buy expression of interest form for N2.5 million or so and I bought the form, but when it comes to the contest, you will say no that only this person will get the ticket, but you did not refund my money, how do you reconcile that.
“There are things you do not return to, you better forget it. We have to create an avenue for a new beginning and move forward because human beings easily forget. Because of the love they have for this party, they will want to open a new beginning”, according to him.
Speaking further, the National Vice chairman (north), said the structures of the APC as a result of the inability of the leadership to reposition the party, has become very weak, from wards to the national level, adding that this was what he was trying to avoid.
“I told him to come back to the track and if he cannot do it, let him leave because some of us have suffered to build this party. Oshiomhole is my very good friend and we have been very close friends but when something went wrong, I cannot sit down when the house is collapsing on our heads without telling the world what was happening”, he said.
Responding to how the party can be revived, he said “There are ways of doing it. We are not new comers in this game, we know how to revamp the partty but it only depends on whether they can listen to us. I am not the chairman, he is, if we advice and he does not take our advice and if he refuses to take, what do we do.”
