The Damaturu Senior Magistrate Court 11, presided over by Gambo A. Ibrahim, has sentenced a 27 year-old married woman, Habiba A. Ibrahim to six months’ imprisonment and to pay a compensation of the sum of N40, 000 to the complainant.
The prosecutor, Cpl. Zakar Saleh, told the court that on or before July 25, 2014, at about 0700 hours, the accused person, Habiba A. Ibrahim, a resident of Waziri Ibrahim housing estate in Damaturu, Yobe state, stole one goat and two sheep worth N40,000, belonging to one Asabe Ezekiel and one Hajara Sarki, all of the same address.
The prosecutor told the court that the offence contradicts section 287 of the Penal Code law, punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years or with fine or both.
The accused, who pleaded guilty to the charge against her, begged for leniency.
The presiding judge, based on his finding that the accused person is a first time offender, and based on her prayer for leniency, sentenced her to six months’ imprisonment or to pay a fine of N5000 and to a pay the sum of N40, 000 as compensation to the complainants within two weeks from the day of judgment, being August 25, 2014.
