An Abuja Senior Magistrates’ Court yesterday sentenced a 27-year-old housemaid, Tosin Adeyefa, to three months in prison for stealing N500, 000.
Senior Magistrate Folashade Onyekan handed down the judgment after the Adeyefa pleaded guilty to stealing from her employer, one Mrs Juliana Richard.
The magistrate ordered that the convict should refund back the N171, 000, which the convict claimed she had spent from the money.
The convict was said to have absconded with the money, which she was sent by Richard to deposit in Zenith Bank on May 5.
Police prosecutor, Cpl. Umar Ango, had told the court earlier that the convict was reported at the Wuse Divisional Police Headquarters, by her employer on the same date.
Ango said the complainant told the police that the convict was instructed to deposit the money into her employer’s account at Wuse Market branch of the bank instead she deposited the money into her own personal account.
According to him, Adeyefa was traced down to Lagos through the help of the bank when she attempted to withdraw money from her account through the automated teller machine.
The prosecutor added that during investigation, the sum of N329, 000 was discovered in the convict’s account and that she committed the case of theft contrary to sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
