Tension and palpable fear of the unknown have continued to unsettle the family of Onochie in Illah Community, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta State following the killing of a member of the family, a director in the State Ministry of Works identified as J.O.Onochie by suspected assassins.
Onochie was killed right inside his uncompleted building on Sunday
While some residents of the community who spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity described the incident as pathetic and devastating, considering the tragedy barely one year after the said Onochie allegedly lost his wife to kidney disease.
They alleged that Onochie’s killers could be suspected armed bandits who have been on rampage in the community in the last few weeks and have made lives unbearable for the residents, especially during nightfall.
But the Public Relations Officer ( PRO) Ministry of Works in the state, Tina Oki who spoke to journalists in Asaba confirmed that Onochie was allegedly murdered by unknown gunmen in his uncompleted building where he went to do some work at Ilah Community on Sunday
Sources said that Onochie before his untimely death, was easy going and hardworking even as a director in the State Ministry of Works.
The Police Commissioner in the state, Hafiz Mohammed Inuwah in a swift reaction, said that the police were determined to fish out Onochie’s killers even though no arrest has been made, adding that investigation was ongoing with a view to bringing those responsible for the killing of Onochie to arrest.
Unconfirmed sources said that the unidentified gunmen drove in Toyota Camry without plate number as they made straight to their victim’s uncompleted building where he was doing some work to kill him after several bullets unleashed on him at close range even when he tried to escape to no avail.
At the premises of the state Ministry of Works, staffers were seen gnashing their teeth in pains while many others who could not hold themselves with the news, openly wept profusely as the late Onochie was described to be a good man while he was alive.
