A Group under the auspices of Community Life Project (CLP)-ReclaimNaija with support from MacArthur Foundation yesterday commenced a 3-day training in Kaduna for 188 selected School Based Management Committee members from Ikara, Kaduna South and Sanga local government areas of Kaduna State.
The program officer Community Life Project (CLP) Collins Dike disclosed this during the flags-off of the training in kaduna yesterday.
He said the training was basically to guide them on their roles in the education sector.
The SBMC members he added are expected to among others ensure that all children of school age in the community attend and finish primary junior secondary schools and frequently check on how the school is performing and ensure that the school is well managed.
To work with parents, guardians and school administrators to ensure that children perform well in school and also ensure that there is also adequate security in the schools for the protection of both pupils and school property.
He further said, the SBMCs are to ensure that school projects are built to standard, work with stakeholders to raise funds and ensure availability of funds for school projects and also ensure that the free education is really free and that no financial burdens are imposed on parents.
Mr Dike also disclosed that a Needs Assessment of Schools was carried out in the three local governments as part of the MacArthur supported government – CSO partnership initiative.
Earlier in his remarks before declaring the training opened, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education Mrs Phoebi Sukai Yayi commended the organizers for training the SBMC’s member who she described as critical stakeholders.
She said the Universal Basic Education has come to stay and compulsory in Kaduna State, stressing that it is an offence for school age children not to be in school and that parents of such children will also be prosecuted.
“Education requires multisectoral approach for it to succeed and support from the MacArthur foundation in the training of the SBMC members. Government is serious about education in Kaduna State hence requires support from all and sundry”.
