Group tasks Bauchi gov’t on proper sewer management to prevent diseases

Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Bauchi state under the aegis of ‘Bauchi State Network of Civil Society Organizations (BASNEC) have appealed to the state government to initiate an intervention that will address proper sewer management in order to prevent outbreak of diseases in the state.
Spokesperson of the group Sukumun Ezekiel made the appeal when members of the network led by its chairman Jinjiri Garba paid an advocacy visit to the Bauchi State Urban and Water Sewage Corporation (BSWSC) on Wednesday.
He said, provision of water, sanitation and hygiene services will go along way in preventing the deadly coronavirus pandemic and other infections such as; malaria, typhoid, cholera and diarrhea.
Sukumun said the state government needs to release funds to the corporation now than any other period towards provision of water, sanitation and hygiene facilities as handwashing is critical in the prevention of coronavirus.
“BASNEC is calling on the corporation to scale up the ongoing intervention to cover all the 20 local governments headquarters in the state in line with the mandate of the corporation.
“As a result of the continuous outbreak of diseases, we are calling on the government to also initiate an intervention that will address proper sewer management in line with the establishing law”. He said.
Responding, the Managing Director of the corporation Engineer Aminu Aliyu Gital said the mandate of the corporation is to provide water and sewage services to every community that has up to 20, 000 residents in the state.
He urged people to always pay their water bills as and when due so as to enable them provide adequate supply.
