Opiatoha K’Idoma, a social cultural group in Benue State has raised alarm over high rate of insecurity in Idoma land.
Secretary-general of the group Adoka Adaji who raised the alarm at the weekend during an interaction with Journalists in Makurdi, said there is a certain area called Olo in Okpokwu local government area of the State which he likened to ‘Sambisa Forest’ where armed youths carry out their barbarous and heinous operations.
According to him, they usually lay siege on their prey most of whom are traders and rob them of their goods and belongings..
He said the police are aware of the existence of the area but have not dared to go there and appealed passionately to the Inspector of Police to set up a special squad to tackle the group before it metamorphoses into a terrorist group.
“There has been heightened insecurity in Idoma land with attendant incidents of armed robbery, murder and customs. Though I commend the effort of the Governor in improving security in the State, more effort need to be done in securing the lives of the people. I call on financial institutions as part of their social responsibility and other wealthy individual to assists the State in donation of security vehicles and other gadgets that will help in fighting criminality in the State”, Adaji appealed.
On restructuring, he slammed those against it as ‘selfish’, maintaining that Nigerians need to restructure their attitude by giving everyone a sense of belonging.
“There should be no marginalization of any tribe. All tribes should be treated equally since the Commonwealth of the nation belongs to all. This is why I support local government autonomy. The third tier of government should be allocated more than 30 percent of the nation’s resources. We should not allow restructuring destroy our nation at this time”, he cautioned.
