From Ibrahim Sidi Muh’d Gusau

The Zamfara state Coalition of Civil Society Network (CCSN) has accused Officers and men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) of alleged extra judicial punishment on a suspect who allegedly committed defamation of character against a complainant.
In a petition by the Chairman of the CCSN, Anas Sani Anka and made available to our reporter in Gusau the state capital, the complainant simply identified as Ummakhani reported that the accused who was identified as Shehu Maigemu, has spoiled her good name, therefore seeking for law to intervene.
According to the petition, one of the officers of the NSCDC had placed a phone call on the suspect, inviting him for confirmation and to subsequently investigate the matter as directed by the law, the situation had allegedly changed as eight of the NSCDC corps members surrounded him with all sorts of torturing approach.
“Instead of questioning the suspect and his statement as rules provided, your men allegedly went after the suspect beating and slapping him numerously to the extent he was badly injured both in his face and some other parts of his body”, the petition reads.
The petition further contained that, the NSCDC officers had taken the suspect to Shariah High Court sitting at Unguwar Yarima in Gusau where he was offered a bail and released on the ground that the Presiding Judge was not on seat.
The officers of the NSCDC, as according to the statement, had allegedly informed the suspect that, the mother of the complainant had already paid a 4-day feeding money elsewhere with hope he would be remanded by the court for some days until last Tuesday, 2nd of January.
Expressing concern on the incidence, the CCSN further read, “ That the suspect has currently sustained an injury in the head and can not hear with the left ear due to high level of injury sustained as well, he can not eat safely due to the frequent signs of vomiting he is suffering, therefore, awaiting with keen interest to see the action to be taken by your Command soonest”.
The group gave a one week ultimatum to the state Command of the NSCDC within which, if nothing is done, it will be left with no option than to drag the state Command of the NSCDC to a competent court for legal intervention against the alleged over zealous men and officers.
Accosted, the Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC state Command, DSP Aminu Maru said, the Command has not received any signal or complain about the incidence yet, therefore, cannot respond to any allegation against the Command.
