There is clear move to decentralise this year’s Abuja Carnival, by spreading some of the activities to other Area Councils within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
This move was disclosed yesterday in Abuja when the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed visited the FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello.
Mohammed explained that government’s decision to decentralise the carnival was based on the need to make the entire FCT feel the impact of the cultural carnival.
He added that the government decided that the seven events for this year’s carnival would take place in seven different locations within the FCT.
This, he noted was against the practice of restricting the carnival to Eagle Square and the Old Parade Ground alone.
According to him, “The street carnival and opening ceremony will start from the Old Parade Ground to Area 1, the children fiesta will be held at Government Secondary School, Garki (Area 10). The durbar will hold at Kuje Stadium, the boat regatta will be at Jabi Dam.
“ Also the masquerade fiesta will be moved to Government day Secondary School, Gwagwalada, while the traditional cuisine and the bush bar will take place at the Old Parade Ground.
“The performance would take place at the Banquet Hall of the State House, while the contemporary music fiesta will take place at the Old Parade Ground.”
Responding, FCT minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, who reitrated readiness of the administration’s support for the carnival, noting that the carnival, which is a very important event, would also showcase the FCT and all the locations within the area councils.
Bello, while commending federal government’s decision to spread the activities of the carnival Area Councils of the FCT, said that the idea would create social and economic activities, as well as make residents to participate be actively.
He also pledged the support of various secretariats of the administration towards ensuring the success of the carnival.
The Minister however appealed to his counterpart of information Ministry to incorporate fishing festival in its subsequent events, noting that the FCT is a home to a very large water bodies.
