As the 2015 general election draws nearer, politicians in Gombe state are already warming up for the political war ahead, with the opposition party in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC) vowing that nothing will hinder it from sweeping all elective positions in the forth coming general elections in the state.
The APC has already unfolded a strategy as a formidable opposition to challenge the ruling party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) government with a view to bringing a change of government so as to ensure that citizens of the state benefit from the dividends of democracy.
The political balance in Gombe state was however tilted recently with the declaration by a former Minister of State in the Ministry of Power and Steel, Alhaji Murtala Aliyu, who recently made known his intention to gun for the governorship seat under the APC.
Even though sources say that the PDP in the state still believes that it is in a position to beat any opposition in the election, with the party said to be preparing to counter the intrigues of the APC, Aliyu’s declaration on the political terrain and on the platform of the opposition, has added gusto to the effort by the opposition to dislodge the PDP from power in Gombe state.
Declaring his intention to become governor of the state in 2015, Aliyu, founder of the renowned consulting firm, Afri-Projects Consortium, said he decided to run for the number one position in the state because of the passion he has developed for Gombe state with a view to making it better governed than being done presently.
Having undertaken a tour of the party offices across the 11 local government areas of the state, the former minister was the first among others to declare publicly his intention to run against the incumbent in 2015.
Investigations by our reporter indicates that among other candidates warming up to challenge for the governorship ticket under the APC in the state are; former deputy Speaker of the federal House of representatives, Bayero Nafada and Alhaji Inuwa Yahaya. Both politicians are expected to lead the pack in the effort to clinch the ticket of the party to gun for the gubernatorial seat.
While on the tour across the state, Aliyu made known his plans to further develop the state by spreading wide dividends of democracy aimed at improving the living standards of the ordinary people.
While lamenting that youths in the state have been compromised and excluded from the activities of government, Aliyu said the APC cannot afford to fold its hands and watch the lives of the future leaders of the state being mortgaged, stressing that he is optimistic he could unseat the present government which he described as a failure.
He asserted that for any government to succeed, the youths must be given priority and a sense of direction.
The APC governorship aspirant maintained that the ruling PDP government has lost focus and thereby unable to enthrone the much needed culture of institutionalizing good governance in the state. He argued that Gombe state requires new people on board to inject their experience and national exposure in order to move the state forward.
Though his emergence as an aspirant under the APC is expected to ruffle some feathers, particularly in the camps of the two politicians already mentioned, Aliyu’s aspiration was warmly received by party stakeholders from across the 11 local government areas, with supporters trooping out to declare support for his candidature.
Party officials, supporters and well wishers were said to have warmly received Aliyu while he toured the state, promising to support and stand by him through thick and thin until he eventually wins the governorship election.
Hadi Ibrahim, one of such supporters who spoke with Peoples Daily in Gombe said Murtala Aliyu is the right choice to become governor of the state mostly because of his accumulated wealth of experience both as a civil servant and a businessman.
“We are all aware of his track record of achievements. If such a person could become the next governor of Gombe state, we stand to benefit immensely” Ibrahim stated.
All said and done, it still remains to be seen if Murtala Aliyu, having previously led a successful life as a civil servant as well as a businessman, would scale the odds and not only emerge as the candidate of the APC but also dislodge the incumbent governor of Gombe state, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo.
