No fewer than six travelers lost their lives in a ghastly motor accident in the early hours of yesterday around Otulu after Issele-Asagba community along Benin – Asaba expressway.
Eye witness said that the accident occurred when 18 seater popular transport company bus (name withheld) veered out of its way while trying to escape a deep pot hole around Otulu community as the driver was heading towards the eastern part of the country, leaving the bus to somersault with the six passengers out of the 18 dead, while others were fatally injured and were rushed by road safety officials to Issele-Uku hospital.
Reports said that the driver of the 18 seater bus though did not die but had his spinal cord broken and is at the time of filing in this report in a critical condition, while others who sustained degrees of injuries are currently being treated at the government owned hospital Issele-Uku.
However, residents who spoke to Peoples Daily blamed FERMA for its non-challant attitude towards the repairs of failed portions along the expressway. This is even as they called on the federal and state governments for assistance saying pot holes pose a lot of danger to their lives.
Speaking to our correspondent, the Public Enlightenment Officer of the
Federal Road Safety Corps, Julius Bassey said the accident was unfortunate, saying that the driver of the bus in an attempt to escape the pot hole veered out of its way leaving the bus to have somersaulted inside the bush where it ran into.
He said that though some persons were fatally injured, but those who lost their lives have been deposited at the federal medical mortuary; while those injured are being treated by medical experts.
