General Buhari and 2015 Presidential contest

By Abbas Yushau Yusuf

As we prepare for the 2015 presidential and general elections, former Head of State, General Muhammadu Buhari, in his 70s, is hale and hearty to run for president again. No doubt, there is no product for sale in the electoral market of 2015 provided the charismatic General is alive and his teeming supporters continue to sight the General physically or through the news media.

I have never seen a politician in the present day Nigeria that matches Buhari’s leadership qualities as exhibited in his campaign outings since he joined the political bandwagon in the afternoon of April 25 2002 at his home town of Daura. By then politicians who felt that they have been in politics for quite a number of years felt shortchanged on Buhari’s entry into Nigerian politics. He was instrumental to the rise of many underdog politicians who ended up betraying him when they mounted the mantle of leadership and the General without a just cause turned out to be their enemy.

As a two time presidential candidate of the ANPP some politicians used him as a ladder and clinched juicy positions and later abandoned Buharis’ platform for their own selfish interest.

He had seen how his name is used as a bedrock for hoodwinking the gullible Nigerian masses especially in the North while in the real sense those politicians does not have Buhari’s ideological and merciful mind to rescue the Nigerian Masses from the Misrule of the present Generation of leaders.

Many analysts believed that Buharis’ inability to win the presidential elections from 2003 to Date was his failure to be accepted in the southern part of this country which is a lie concocted by mischief makers to continue tarnishing the image of the Patriotic General.

If his non acceptability in the southern part of this country was instrumental to his losing the General elections there is no way all the Presidential candidates presented by the PDP who are southerners from 1999 to Date with the exception of Late President Umar Musa Yaradua will win the presidential elections fairly and squarely.

If candidates are to be elected based on their religion and region there is no way one will win the presidential elections under this arrangement.

The polarisation of the country along North ,South , Islam or Christianity have led Nigerians astray as everyone is kin in seeing his kinsman having a shot at the presidency which is impossible.

The only way to any Nigerian irrespective of religion and ethnicity will win Election free and fair is by involving all and sundry which General Muhammadu Buhari is doing.

Chief MKO Abiola won Kano and other Important states for his alliance with Northern politicians despite been a Yoruba while alliance between the West and the North is dated back to the 1964 General elections when the premier of the defunct western region Samuel Ladoke Akintola fused his Nigerian National Democratic Party NNDP with the Northern Peoples congress NPC which gave birth to Nigerian National Alliance NNA, this fusion of the two gargantuan parties led the NNA to victory before the First republic was short lived by the unfortunate Military Coup of January 15 1966.

The above scenario play itself in 1993 June twelve when Northern political elites with the support of the Masses voted massively for late chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawole Abiola.

As the 2015 is knocking on the door, The southwest elite have to pay back to the North by rallying round behind General Muhammadu Buhari who already has a cult like following in the Northern part of NIGERIA.

General Buharis’ defunct congress for progressive change is a major share holder in the present political merger of different political parties that formed the APC in order to bring an end to the Misrule of PDP for the past sixteen years. It’s signaled that the southwest is serious in 2015 when it comes to supporting General Muhammad Buhari to emerge as Nigerian President.

The repeat of the Nuhu Ribadu example should be the last political suicide and blunder to be committed by the south-west in 2011 when they voted for ACN at all levels except during the presidential election in which they turned against Nuhu, their presidential candidate, and voted for Jonathan.

The charismatic General will have less to battle with as Governor Rochas Okorocha once called him the commander of armless Nigerians. With the APC having won in Osun state, there will be no big deal if the house is put in order and one of the presidential hopefuls, General Buhari, is giving the chance to fly the party’s flag and win the Presidency come 2015.
