For allegedly extorting cancer patients and engaging in human trafficking related activities in the FCT , four persons were yesterday arraigned at the Upper Area Court, Mpape, Abuja, which remanded them in Prison.
The suspects simply identified as Princess, Victor, Francis and Makinde were arraigned on a three-count charge of criminal conspiracy, cheating and extortion of cancer patients and vulnerable people brought into the FCT.
According to the Police First Information Report (FIR), the three accused were apprehended on 18th May in Kubwa for allegedly assembling cancer patients and taking them round the FCT, soliciting for funds.
It added the suspects acted dishonestly by converting the funds realised on behalf of the sick persons for their personal benefit.
After the case was mentioned before the presiding judge, Honourable Hassan Muhammad, the accused persons entered no guilty pleas.
Consequently, following the no guilty plea by the accused, the prosecution counsel,Barr. Donatus Abah, made an application to the court, for them to be remanded in prison pending hearing proper.
As expected, the defense lawyer, Pius Onigah swiftly orally applied for bail to be granted to the accused persons, as the offences are bailable in nature.
After a strong objection to the bail application, the trial judge ordered that accused persons be remanded in Keffi Prison, and adjourned the matter till 29 May for hearing on the pending bail application proper.
Explaining further, the Police Prosecutor, said: “From the facts in the FIR, it appears that a likely case of trafficking in human maybe be involved in the process.
“But I don’t have the full facts now, that is why I asked the court to kindly remand the accused persons in the prison custody, so that by the time I go back to the office of the Area Commander, where the matter emanates from, we will be able to know what to do.”
