An early morning torrential rainfall in some parts of Delta State yesterday submerged Igbodo Community in Delta State with several persons rendered homeless.
It was gathered that properties worth millions of naira were also destroyed to the rainfall which lasted for few hours and was later followed with hot sun.
Director, Media and Publicity of the Community, Nkem Nweke who spoke to journalists in the community, said that the country home of the Iyase of the community (Prime Minister) Dr If Unomah was among the buildings affected and destroyed by the rainfall, adding that several persons’ houses were also destroyed.
Accounts on what must have gone wrong as the time of this report, were conflicting as some people claimed that the water came out of the ground in anger and that legend small river called”Omelebele” exists in that particular area of the community.
But the President General of the Community,. Deacon Matthew Okwaje expressed shock and sadness over the development, stating that roads and drains recently constructed in some towns around Igbodo Community including Umunede Community, Akumazi and Ekwuoma must have added to the heavy flooding as the waters from these areas have found their way into Igbodo Community.
He disclosed that he was already making efforts to reach authorities of the state government aimed at finding solution to the problems before the entire community will be wiped out in the scheme of things Secretary to the State Government ( SSG) Barr Chiedu Ebie however, expressed sympathy with the people whose properties were destroyed and thanked God that there was no life lost, adding that the state government would continue to assist rainfall victims across the state.
