International Federation of Women Lawyers, Benue State chapter, FIDA has lamented over the rising rate of rape of underage teenagers.
New Chairperson of the Federation Dr. (Mrs) Magdalyne Dura who made the lamentation at the weekend while speaking with newsmen after her election, promised to fight against the crime with every vigor.
Mrs. Dura was unanimously elected alongside Debbie Amine who emerged as Secretary, Regina Alachi, Assistant Secretary, Michelle Terfa-Suswam, Treasurer, Blessing Ityohuan, Financial Secretary and Addingi, Publicity Secretary.
She also promised that the new FIDA leadership in the next three years would be fully engaged in activities that would enhance the status of women and children by providing legal aid, legal literacy and
educational programmes for women and children.
“In the next few days we will acquire a functional Secretariat, from where we will set out to actualize our vision and dreams for FIDA. My leadership will also spur our members to ensure that the mandate of
FIDA is actualized in Benue state.
“We are going to set up libraries for books including electronic and law reports where the younger ones could do their research and refer to publications before going to court.
“We want to provide a bus and also want to have a micro credit scheme for lawyers to assist our members in need. Our leadership will take FIDA to an enviable height with the support and cooperation of our
Earlier, the outgone Chairperson, Mrs. Margaret Atu said she was able to enhance the status of women and children and enjoined members to extend the same cooperation she received to the new leadership.
