FG to provide water, irrigation systems in 12 more states

The Federal Government is planning to increase access to water and irrigation systems in twelve more states.

In a statement, Mr. Daniel Daudu, a Director in the ministry, said that since the commencement of the program in 2014, close to one billion dollars ($ 1 billion) in loans and grants have been sourced by the Federal Government from World Bank, African Development Bank, French Development Agency, Islamic Development Bank, European Union and USAID for the implementation of the scheme in 12 states.

She further stated that with the success recorded so far in the implementation of the program, “there is the need to increase coverage of access to water supply and irrigation development in additional 12 states and two River Basin Development Authorities with about additional one billion dollars.”

Ochekpe, who assured of the ministry’s commitment towards achieving its various programmes and objectives through regular monitoring and evaluation, urged the state governments currently on the programme to be more proactive through formulation and implementation of necessary action plans that would enhance the achievements of sustainable water supply to their states.

The minister also commended the Water Supply Program (WSP) for their support towards hosting of workshops, as well as the development partners for their unwavering support to the development of the water sector.
