From Ayodele Samuel, Lagos
Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola yesterday accused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) led federal government of shutting down the domain name of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Fashola, also the Chairman of Buhari/Osinbajo fund-raising team spoke while unveiling the strategies to raise fund for the party’s presidential candidate in Lagos, lamenting that the act showed the apex government’s intolerable attitude to the opposition parties in the country.
“It is important to emphasize the intolerant` disposition of the ruling party to the opposition by informing the public that our party’s domain name which was www. APC.com.ng. incidentally, the website that promotes the country has been shut down by the Nigerian government because they do not want us to use the internet to communicate.
“Regrettably but necessarily, we were compelled to register a new name which they will have little control over. And that was www. apcgmbpyo.org. It will be the internet platform to raise fund for the campaign and other activities,” Fashola said.
Explaining how the fund generated by the team would be expended, Fashola said “We will be spending the fund on the payment of agent fees, so that our vote will count. We will be spending this money on getting our campaign message of change to the electorate through different media platforms.”
He added “The fund would also be spent to cover transportation cost for those who are engaged in the campaign. Some part of the fund would be spent on printing of campaign materials. But we will not use the money to build a secretariat.”
He affirmed that “all fund donated would be spent towards achieving the change that every Nigerian desired and to rescue the country from bad governance. In essence, we are democratizing campaign funding by the strategic partnership that we have formed.”
Fashola explained that the team had designed five payment platforms to give everyone the opportunity to participate in the donation, saying “no amount would be too small to donate.”
“The first is through bank payment. And five banks have been saddled with that responsibility. What the banks would do was to provide dedicated teller and it will have on it: APCGMBPYO 2015. And it will be available in all their branches across the country.
“Other forms of donation are electronic-transaction through www. APCGMBPYO.org, Premium Short Messages (SMS) and ring-tones download at N100. And through scratch card which have different denominations,” he added.
“Today, we unveil many platforms where those who can or cannot vote can still participate in the February election by contributing to the Buhari/Osinbajo campaign. This campaign will need money as all other election. We are very clear of what we will be spending this money on.”
Fashola however vowed that “all the businesses that we have partnered with have no partisan affiliation with our party. This partnership is for commercial purpose. They are simply putting forward their platforms and providing professional services. And this was important for me to say before the ruling party could begin to threaten their businesses.”
