The Federal Government at the weekend inaugurated an eight member board to govern the affairs of the Nigerian National Merit Award (NNMA)

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, representing President Goodluck Jonathan at the inauguration said the aim of establishing NNMA by Act No. 53 of 1979 constitution was to recognize deserving citizens who have contributed to the development of the nation through academic achievements.

According to him, approval had been given by President Jonathan for an increment in the cash prize for each recipient, from N5 million to N10 million.

He said the gesture is not only to attract more entries for the award but to support the recipients in their pursuit of excellence.

He urged the new Chairman of the board, Prof. F.S. Idachaba and members to continue with the diligence past leaders have shown in discharging the activities of the board.

Meanwhile, the new Chairman, Prof Idachaba has vowed not to receive any sitting allowance throughout his tenure on the board.

Other members of the board are Prof. Paul B. Onaji, HRH Igwe Prof LazEkwueme, Prof. Andrew J. Nok, Prof. (Mrs.) G.T Olutuha, Prof. John D. Enaohwo, Prof. Garba U. Goje and Mr. AbiodunOyemade, representing SGF’s office.
