From Femi Oyelola, Kaduna

The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola has handed over rehabilitated internal roads, spanning two kilometres to the Kaduna Polytechnic.
Fashola while handing over the projects which included walkways, drainages and parking lots in Kaduna yesterday, said they were rehabilitated by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing.
Represented by the Federal Controller, Works in the state, Mr Finbarr Zirra, Fashola said that the gaps of infrastructure in schools were being bridged through steady renewal and reconstruction.
He noted that the quality of education would be significantly impacted by the quality of infrastructure and the learning environment, which he said the Federal Government was making efforts to improve.
The minister said that there were 43 of such interventions within tertiary institutions across the country as part of interventions to restore defective roads to motor able states.
“So far, 18 out of the 43 interventions have been completed and today we are handing over the completed projects to the management of Kaduna Polytechnic.
“This is a critical contribution to support education and a crucial investment in the education sector,” Fashola said.
The Director of Works, Kaduna Polytechnic, Mrs Umm Aminu, said that the rehabilitation includes scarification of existing bituminous surfacing; filling of portholes; and construction of reinforced concrete lined drains.
Others are laying of 100-millimeter interlocks as walkway; and laying of asphaltic concrete wearing course.
The Rector of the polytechnic, Prof. Idris Bugaje, thanked the ministry for selecting Kaduna polytechnic as one of the beneficiaries of the project.
Bugaje said that the intervention has given the school a facelift, whose roads were in a very bad shape when he assumed office as the rector of the institution two years ago.
He appealed to the federal government to extend the gesture to the three other campuses of the institution, whose roads were also in bad conditions and in dire need of rehabilitation.
