Super Falcons opponents Cote d’Ivoire were beaten 2-1 by South Africa in an international friendly match played at the Moruleng Stadium.
The match was used by both sides to prepare for the upcoming biggest women’s football showpiece event in Africa scheduled to take place in Namibia from 11th to 25th October.
Veteran striker Portia Modise opened the scoring in the first half after capitalising on the visitor’s poor defence in the 44th minute, scoring her 98th goal in the national team jersey.
Cote d’Ivoire, then, pushed for an equalizer by throwing women forward but this move made them susceptible for a counter attack as made evident by South Africa’s second goal netted by Sanah Mallo.
The visitors pulled one back in the 69th minute, but this did not dampen down the well composed South African ladies as they continued to pile pressure on the Ivorians, with their keeper the busiest of the two, ending the match in favour of Banyana Banyana.
Meanwhile, hosts, Namibia who are in the Super Falcons’ group will come up against Algeria in an exhibition match on 4th October, a game tailored to serve as a dummy run for the continental showpiece for a mere N$20 entrance fee per person.
Six-time champions Nigeria are in Group A with hosts, Namibia, Cote d’Ivoire and Zambia whilst Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana and South Africa constitute Group B for the 11-25 October 2014 tournaments.
The three top finishers at the tournament will represent the continent at the 2015 FIFA women’s World Cup in Canada.
