The former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili has lashed out on lawmakers for the failure to provide the dividends of democracy which she said has made the people to lose confidence in Nigeria’s democracy.
Ezekwesili, who is also the Co-leader of the #BringBackOurGirls group on her twitter page, expressed grievance and blamed the leadership of the National Assembly for not doing enough to earn the trust of the public through legislative integrity.
“The reason we continue after 18 years of uninterrupted democracy, to have low public trust in our society is because of the quality of legislature. For as long as the individual and institutional integrity of @nassnigeria remains poor in citizens’ rating, executive scandals will soar. Ordinarily it should be that citizens hold their legislature in high regard and therefore have high public trust in government, but we don’t.” she said.
Ezekwesili further urged Nigerians not to behave in an apathetic manner when it comes to the election of lawmakers to improve the quality of the people that constitute the legislature.
“If we ever manage to improve the quality of those that constitute our legislature public trust rises. To build up our public trust, we direly need a legislature that is trusted by citizens to hold the executive accountable” she added.
