The Kwara State Government said that it will no longer condone the unruly behavior of some school principals in the state who extort money from pupils in a way that blackmails the government’s free education policy
Speaking with journalists at the weekend in her office, the Hon. Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Hajia Bilikis Oniyangi said that sharp practices by school principals in some schools put a question to the state’s free education and therefore those caught in those practices will be treated according to the civil service rule.
She explained that some school principals, ten of them now caught were hiding under the agreed mandatory Parent Teachers Association, PTA levies to extort money from pupils in a way that puts the states free education policy to questions as opposed to agreed terms with PTA, ANCOPSS, NUT and other major stake holders in the education system.
According to her, “Schools were to charge N1450 and N1500 for returning students in the junour secondary school and Senior secondary schools respectively while charges for new students was put at N5130 and N5380 for Juniour secondary school and senior secondary schools respectively but however, to my utmost surprise during an unscheduled monitoring to some of the school. I discovered that many of the school’s principals willfully violated the agreement with PTA and charged as much as between N7000 and N40,000 from unsuspecting parents and the government of Kwara state will not accept that unruly behavior.”
“Parents have however been asked to seek a refund from concerned Principals while the government will also meet appropriate disciplinary action on them according to civil service rules in the state.”
Oniyangi also expressed the displeasure of government to lateness, truancy, abetting of examination malpractices and absconding of staff from school adding that the government of kwara State will henceforth relieve erring staff of their duties when found wanting.
She finally berated the attitude of N-Power members whom she said does not come to work, but are only interested in the salaries from federal government averring that the purpose of federal government.
She called on members of the PTA and relevant bodies on schools management to cooperate with government to sanitize the education system in Kwara state for the betterment of all kwarans.
