An Abule Egba Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, on Thursday, sentenced a 25-year-old ex-convict, Lukmon Taofeek, to one year imprisonment for stealing a box of jewelry and other valuables.The Magistrate, Mr. Tajuddeen Elias, sentenced Taofeek, convicted Taofeek without an option of fine following his guilty plea.
He said Taofeek should serve his term at the Kirikiri Minimum Prisons, Lagos.
Elias noted that the barber had previously been convicted by his court for a different offence, adding that community service was imposed on him as penalty.
“It shows that accused has not been reformed. He is, therefore, sentenced to one year imprisonment for conspiracy and stealing. It will serve as deterrent to others,” he said.
The accused, who lives at No. 23, Atanla St., Ipaja, a suburb of Lagos, was arraigned on November 16 on a four-count charge of conspiracy, burglary, stealing and causing breach of peace.
Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Rachael Williams, told the court that the offences were committed on June 9 at MercyLand Estate, Atankekere, Ipaja.
Williams said the accused with a man still at large broke into the house of one Mrs. Modinat Aniyikaye and stole some of her belongings including a box of jewelry.
She said that the thieves also stole a Nokia phone and N3, 500.
“As they were fleeing the scene, members of a vigilante group intercepted them and arrested only Lukmon, while his accomplice escaped.”
The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravene Sections 166,278, 305 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos state, 2011. (NAN)
