The immediate past director of the Federal Capital Territory department of Audit, Alhaji Bala Kawu has tasked staff of the department to be more diligent, transparent and professional in their career so as to maintain the high standards and confidence they have set for themselves in order to ensure transparency and accountability in the FCT Administration.
Kawu noted that the department must sustain the confidence reposed in the FCT minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello and the FCTA Permanent Secretary, Sir Christian Chinyiaka Ohaa.
He made this point while responding on behalf some retirees during last week’s send-forth ceremony organized for them at the Cyprian Ekwensi Centre (Arts and Culture Centre), Area 10, Garki, Abuja.
He disclosed that about 99 percent of recommendations on investigation reports have been accepted by the Administration during his tenure as director, and a lot of government resources have been saved by the department, urging the staff to save more for the FCTA.
According to him, “Our audit operation manual has remained a point of reference even by federal ministries. We have put ourselves at a very high level, where we are receiving commendations form many quarters.
“The FCT minister and the Permanent Secretary have done a lot for us, by giving us support and confidence so the department cannot afford to disappoint.
“We need to be very discipline, very versatile and learn, and also be humble, knowing that you are dealing, not only with records, but also with human beings.
“Do not be aggressive, be respectful and kind to people. Try as much as possible to see how you can minimize mismanagement in public organizations.”
Karu therefore urged the staff to give an even higher support to his successor -the Acting Director of Audit, Nathaniel Adeyinka Faseyi, whom he advised to ensure there is encouragement and motivation in line with the rules.
Earlier in his remarks, the Acting Director expressed profound gratitude to God for the retirees, noting that the 35 years of meritorious service they rendered to the nation has “significantly contributed to nation building and development” and marked the “height of selflessness, commitment and dedication to one’s fatherland.”
He described his predecessor as “very competent, dedicated, honest and bold”, adding that Bala Kawu was rather a brother than a boss who has an open mind and always listened to whoever, making sense of every complaint.
According to him, “I sincerely appreciate the support of both the minister and permanent secretary who have really helped us in building a veritable department because of their backing, we have and will continue to deliver effective auditing services without fear or favour.”
Charging the staff on accountability, probity and transparency, Faseyi said that the backing was the reason for their boldness and versatility in carrying out their functions.
“The foundation of the house has not only been built but the house itself has been built, so let us continue to improve so that we do not go back. I urge you (Audit staff) to uphold the tenets of the profession and be discipline at all times,” he stressed.
On her part, Auditor-General of FCT, Hajiya Kudirat Abdul-malik, advised that auditors should be seen as friends who were there to right the wrongs however, and assist in putting records straight.
She said: “Some see auditors as spy, intruders, pokenosers and fault-finders, but that is not true. Auditors only ensure that the right things are done. People do not want to do the right things either my mistake or deliberately. They should know that the auditor is only there to right the wrongs because as human beings, we could forget, but with auditors, we can be put on alert”.
“Life is like a book, when you open the first page, it takes you to the next, till the last page of the book, and I have seen that the end of every journey begins another life”.
Highlights of the event included presentation of plaques and gifts to the retirees and different sessions of photograph with staff and family members who thronged the venue to celebrate with their bosses and loved ones.
