The Principal Parnter, Lansar Aghaji & Co . ( Estate Surveyors & Valuers) and Publicity Secretary ,Nigeria Institution of Estate Surveyors ( NIESV) Abuja Chapter,ESV. Lansar Aghaji said Estate Surveyors are indispensable partners in fighting corruption in Nigeria .
ESV . Aghaji made the disclosure during an interview with Peoples Daily reporter in Abuja, yesterday.
He said Estate Surveyors can contribute in combating corruption by creating strategic synergy and partnership with enforcing agencies of all corruption law in Nigeria . “ the Estate Surveyors and Valuers are one of the leading professionals in real estate business and ‘honesty and devotion is their main goal”.
The Principal partner of Lansar Aghaji stated that “there are favorable conditions that allows corruption to strive in any society.
“Some of these factors include; Information deficits, freedom of information, weak accounting practice ,lack of control of government ,lacking civic society and non governmental organization ( NGO) which will monitor government, lack of government accountability to project and how corrupt money ends up in real estate .
He reiterated actions expected by Estate Surveyors and Valuers in unmasking corruption which includes; complying with the fundamental principles of integrity and professional code of conduct and ethics when encountered with a suspected illegal act and Estate Surveyors should partner with code of conduct Bureau (CCB) to Value the assets of any public or civil servant before and after living the office .
“ setting out a clear expectation that will take the action needed to serve the public interest , deter management from committing illegal acts and prompts them to put things when they do occur .
ESV. Ahajahi further pointed out “ we have to recognize that in a situations where Estate Surveyors and Valuers encounter a suspected illegal act in the cost of their work , they placed in a an incredibly difficult position . This leaves the Valuers trying to fill the existing professional responsibilities of their job, that is the confidentiality, fiduciary relationship by ensuring that the regularity authorities,the Nigeria Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers( NIESV )and Estate Surveyors and Valuers Registration Board (ESVARBON) are made aware of a potentially illegal act , serving the public interest when appropriate “.
The Publicity Secretary said Nigeria and international communities are calling for growing commitment to disclosure and report of corrupted cases in our disposal to the appropriate authorities in our daily activities.
“ In order to do this meaningful transparency in business should be adopted, support and actively engaged in the development of related Standard, such as the Global Reporting Initiative such as the financial Reporting Council guidelines”.
“ Estate Surveying and Valuation profession in carrying out their businesses should join and actively promulgate collective action frameworks for corporate integrity, which exist for anything ,from individual tendering processes and sectors to supply chain integrity and multi-stakeholders action. Together we must unmasked the monster called ‘corruption which has entered our blood stream “.
