The President of the Nigeria Esports Federation (NESF) Mr Agbor Clinton has described Nigeria’s entry into the sport as an important milestone as the game not only has great entertainment value, but also possess the potential for providing a source of livelihood to people of all ages that should be supported to thrive in the country.
Speaking with newsmen in Abuja, the president said the federation has set a machinery in motion to enable thousands of Nigerians to access and participate in any online sport of their choice whether on a competitive or entertainment level.
Clinton explained that since Esports is an online sport, the federation is working with relevant stake holders and government organs to ensure that the most important requirement which is internet services is made effective and available to Nigerians.
“Today we are about launching a world class gaming league with a capacity of fifty thousand Nigeria playing simultaneous, this is the first of its kind in the continent of Africa.
“We opened discussion with the ministry of communication and digitalization on the online gaming as regard the use of data. “All this are with the aim of empowering the Nigerian youths with esports.
“Beside participating in the exports league domestically it will afford the Nigerian gamers the opportunity to compete with the international community at the bigger stages.” Clinton said.
On its acceptance, Clinton underscored the fact that Esport are recognized and registered by the Federal Ministry of Sports has a wide acceptance especially among the youth and already has associations in 36 states and the FCT, adding that a wide range of sporting events are currently being held at state and zonal levels.
“After series of correspondents from the Esports Federation of Nigeria and the Federal ministry of sports we became a federation in 2018.
“On the international scene, Nigeria is a board member of the Confederation of Africa Esports are close to be a full member of the International Esports Federation (IESF).
“The Federation is presently working on a lineup of activities that will drive support for Esports , and now holds interstate competitions , college and zonal qualification tournaments.
“Esports Federation has also established 37 Esports state associations to drive home the game of Esports in Nigeria.”
Esports has been described as one the most dominant industries of the 21st century, estimated to be worth over 130 billion dollars.
