Emergency agency not for money-making – FEMA DG tells employees

Director-General, FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Alhaji Abbas Idriss has warned its employees that the agency was not a fertile ground for making money, but a place for rendering selfless services to humanity.
Idriss made this point yesterday at the opening of a Two-Day Induction Course for newly deployed members of staff to the agency, held at the FCT Training Facility in Abuja.
He explained that induction was an important tool for ensuring an organisation’s success, especially in terms of preparing newly deployed staff to understand what the agency was established to achieve.
According to him, the mandate of FEMA was to ensure a safer Federal Capital Territory for all residents through a multi-stakeholder approach.
The FEMA boss therefore, urged the inductees to give a new meaning to humanitarian work and public service, through passion; and attitude to work “that seeks no reward nor gratification”.
“FEMA was established to accomplish a specific mission which is not possible without harnessing your combined knowledge, skills and attitudes in line with what the pioneers of the Agency have laboured so far to accomplish.
“Our conviction on your ability to drive home this mission is fanatical and positive.
“Let me stress to all our inductees that among the expected attributes of an employee- namely- skills, knowledge and attitude, the most critical success factor is attitude.
“No matter how knowledgeable and skillful you are, without the right attitude, you will fail in your career aspiration- and by extension, the achievement of your organisational goals.
“For those of you who intend to work with this mindset, I want to assure you that FEMA is not a fertile ground for you to thrive or make money,” he stressed.
Idriss also urged the inductees to exhibit the right attitude to work and shun negative attitude that undermined the performance of an employee at work.
He listed such unacceptable behaviours as absenteeism, lateness to work, closing before official hours and the general belief that government work was nobody’s business.
Responding on behalf of the inductees, Ms Hauwa Gidado expressed readiness of the new employees to work assiduously to enhance disaster management in the territory.
Gidado described the induction as very topical and timely, adding that the exercise had broadened her knowledge on the activities of FEMA and disaster management.
