Chieftains and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday staged protests at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and National Assembly over Wednesday’s tear gassing of the Ekiti State governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose by security men in Ado Ekiti.
The PDP leaders and supporters equally raised alarms over what they called plans by some officials of INEC in collusion with some security officials to rig the Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State in favor of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The PDP peaceful demonstrators submitted letters of protests at INEC and National Assembly.
An INEC National Commissioner, Dr Adekunle Ogunmola received the PDP’s protest letter/petition which was submitted to the commission by the party’s National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus.
The INEC National Commissioner, while receiving the petition, explained that the
mandate of INEC is to conduct free, fair and credible elections.
“That is what we are committed to. I assure you that we are not going to do anything short of that”, he said.
At the National Assembly, the protesters were received by the Deputy President of the Senate, Professor Ike Ekweremadu who assured that their petition will be looked into.
Ekweremadu however harped on the need for the security operatives to maintain neutrality and be fair to all concerned.
Speaking with Journalists after the protest in INEC, the PDP National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus warned against rigging the Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State
According to Secondus, “Our intelligence shoes clearly that some INEC officials and some security agents are in collusion to rig election in Ekiti State.
“We have been informed that what they did in Edo state, which they called result replacement, is what they are planning use to rig election in Ekiti state and we brought all these things to bear to INEC leadership that if they compromise and rig the election, the consequences of their actions they will bear because if you rig election, it is a recipe for crisis.
“You are also aware that there was a civilian coup in Ekiti state yesterday (Wednesday). The entire government house was seized and the entire security operatives brutalized the governor, detained him and harmed him and that is the government house, where the governor had immunity.
“We want a free and fair election in Ekiti state. Anything short of that will be a recipe for problems and crisis and in our own judgment, there may not be elections because that will be the beginning of crisis in our nation.
“We believe that the best the President can give to this nation is to allow free and fail election. If he uses all the forces that are available to the government to frighten the people and also use federal might to frighten the people, that will be one sure road to crisis.
“We want to warn that our party will not condone and will resist every attempt to rig the election in Ekiti state and general election that is coming,” he said.
