In its effort to educate the people on the deadly Ebola virus; Kaduna Refineryand Petrochemical Company (KRPC) management yesterday sensitized its host surrounding communities on the virus with a call on them to ensure personal hygiene as prevention from the disease.
According to the company, it’s part of KRPC social responsibility to reach out to its host communities to enlighten them on the deadly Ebola virus.
KRPC Executive Director Services, Malam Idi Mukhtar at an awareness, prevention and sensitisation campaign on Ebola virus organised by KRPC for its 14 host communities said the company used the event to create awareness and ways to prevent themselves from the virus.
“The sensitisation campaign is to educate the host communities on how to prevent the disease, what symptoms to look out for and the measures to take in case of being infected of the deadly disease.
“KRPC is surrounded by host communities and we are ready at times like this to reach out to sensitise the environment on Ebola virus. We organise this sensitisation involving large number of people from 14 communities within our immediate environment because we know that prevention is the best weapon.
“To explain practices that people believe would contain the virus, telling the people what to do and what not to do we are distributing toilet soap and bleach that when diluted would be used by the people to sanitise their environment. The biggest weapon is awareness,” he said.
He added that it’s their small contribution to create awareness as they also issue out a small pamphlet on the disease.
Idi Muktar said educating the people would no doubt prevent the disease and reduce the chances of infection.
In his remarks, Dr Musa Matsirga of the Kaduna Medical Area of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) said the disease is highly contagious but can be prevented.
He explained that Ebola can only be spread by contact with somebody already afflicted with the disease and it has manifested, adding that the virus can be prevented by regularly washing of hands with soap and sanitizer.
