The Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) yesterday, urged the federal government to stop its plan to retrench1,050 civil servants.

This is contained in a statement, signed by the union’sSecretary-General, Mr Alade Lawal.

He said the union rejected the plan by the government to retrench thecivil servants on the ground that they were in the service illegally.

“The decision by the government to weed out those it alleged areworking in the service unlawfully might be a smokescreen to sackinnocent civil servants who have served the nation meritoriously for decades.”

Lawal urged the government to set up a committee to look into theallegation before any retrenchment could take place.

“We demand that no retirement in whatever form should take place untilall the stakeholders, including the ASCSN verify the claim ofgovernment.

“The union wants to make it clear that if the government embarks onsuch anti-labour exercise without the trade unions participation inestablishing the authenticity of its claim, industrial peace cannot be guaranteed,” he said.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation had on March 31 saidthat 1,050 civil servants, working illegally would be retired in thenext three weeks.

He spoke at the 60th anniversary of the Nigeria Public Service Commission. (NAN)
