Any member of the All Progressives Congress, APC in Borno who defects to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will be making the worst political calculation, because there will be very limited options there.
Chairman of the APC in Borno state, Alhaji Ali Bukar Dalori said in a statement issued yesterday that some aspirants have been putting pressure on a key leader of the APC, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, to defect to PDP thinking they (the aspirants) will have ready-made tickets to become candidates of that party, ahead of the 2015 elections.
Dalori said doing that will spell doom for the aspirants, who “would realize they are wrong when it will however be too late”.
The chairman noted that the PDP in Borno state has many aspirants that have served the party for years, and there was just no way any political party would hand over governorship, two senatorial, five or more House of Representatives tickets to newcomers.
“Look at the instances in Sokoto and Kano where Bafarawa and Shekarau had to even move out of the APC when party leadership was handed over to Governors Aliyu Magatakarda Wammako and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
“Shekarau is now a minister but I can assure you that he is not likely to have his godson as the governorship candidate of the PDP”, Dalori said.
Stressing further, he said: “Most importantly also, the old PDP members are even likely to fight whoever Sheriff anoints as the governorship candidate, if that happens, because the old people know very well that if God forbid, the godson is elected governor, he will only pay attention to Sheriff and those around him while the old PDP members will be strangers in their own party”. He reiterated that no political party will hand over the entire aspirations of its loyal members to a newcomer, unless the party is looking for massive anti party activities.
“We will prefer to have a united APC in Borno; but to be honest with you the APC in Borno state is not under any threat at all. We have the masses, we are very strong and insha Allah we are only waiting for
inauguration of our candidates in May and June, 2015”, he said.
“Anyone that leaves the APC has lost out in 2015 in Borno state; this I can assure anyone, insha Allah, and the problem is that they will turn themselves into visitors in their own home”, Dalori further said.
